Come to Tinley Park they said... You'll like living here, they said
They were wrong.
Now don't misunderstand us, we love Tinley Park. Many of us have lived here for most of our lives. It's not the town we're disappointed in, it's the COST of living here that we're upset about, and we're disappointed in our elected "leaders" for doing nothing about it. As you will see in the home comparisons below, any taxpayer can move out of State and into a larger home and pay MUCH LESS in property taxes, send the kids to top-rated schools and have all of the same public services we have in Tinley Park. By moving, we can have all of these things AND have more money in the bank in the short term, or a substantial savings account in the future because of LOWER PROPERTY TAXES. If the high property taxes in Tinley Park are for good schools, police and fire protection, and all of the other public services that a municipality provides, then how can other communities operate the same way with a MUCH LOWER TAX BURDEN on its taxpayers? These other towns with lower taxes provide the exact same public services. It's time to take an honest look at WHY our taxes are so high. Are governmental bodies in Tinley Park spending more? Are government salaries out of line compared to these other communities? Are taxpayers covering a higher percentage of pensions and insurance for public servants? Is it the TIF districts and corporate welfare? What is it? Based on the home comparisons below, our high taxes are INDEFENSIBLE! |

The tax burden on businesses in Illinois
Lot Dimensions 60 x 200
Zoning: Office County: Cook, Illinois Property Taxes: $15,115 (2015) |
Illinois
The Illinois legislature recently overrode the governor’s veto to adopt a budget which increased the state’s single-rate individual income tax from 3.75 to 4.95 percent, and the corporate income tax rate from 7.75 to 9.5 percent. Pass-through entities also pay a supplemental individual income tax of 1.5 percent (on the same base), known as the personal property replacement tax (PPRT), bringing the individual income tax rate for pass-through businesses to 6.45 percent. A similar 2.5 percent PPRT is included in the state’s 9.5 percent corporate income tax rate. These rate increases caused the state to slip slightly in the business tax rankings by State, to 29th overall in 2018. |
Lot Dimensions 52 x 125
Zoning: Office County: Lake, Indiana Property Taxes: $2,263 (2015) |
Indiana
Indiana saw consistent rate reductions through a series of responsible tax reform efforts between 2011 and 2016. Subsequent legislation established a further schedule of corporate income tax reductions through fiscal year 2022. For 2018, the corporate income tax rate declined from 6.25 to 6.0 percent. These changes, however, were not enough to improve Indiana’s already enviable ranking on the Index in 2018, where the Hoosier State and Utah are functionally tied for the best rankings among states which impose all the major taxes. |
Corporate welfare
It doesn't help the taxpayers in the community when the Village is giving tax breaks and incentives to multi-million dollar corporations and developers. See the list of taxpayer-funded subsidies handed out by the Village of Tinley Park here, and this is the list from Illinois.
